ND wins opener. DU falls at Duke.
Notre Dame celebrates during its 19-6 season opener vs. Detroit.
Notre Dame began its 2019 campaign with an impressive 19-6 win over Detroit Mercy, while Denver lost 10-9 to Duke in Durham.
NOTRE DAME, Ind. (courtesy of und.com) - No. 7/9 Notre Dame (1-0) put on a show in the first game of 2019, running away with a lopsided 19-6 victory over Detroit Mercy (1-1) inside Loftus Sports Center on Saturday evening. The 19 goals are the most the Irish have scored in a game since defeating Dartmouth 20-8 on Feb. 28, 2015.
Junior Bryan Costabile paced the Irish attack, matching his career high in goals with five. Senior Brendan Gleason also recorded a hat trick with three goals. Juniors Brian Willetts and Charlie Leonard and freshman Griffin Westlin each found the back of the net twice.
The defense was just as impressive, causing 15 turnovers in the rout. Seniors Timmy Phillips and Hugh Crance alongside sophomore Arden Cohen each forced two turnovers in the victory.
The Irish could not have asked for a better start to the season, as Leonard scored the first goal of his career off the opening faceoff just 25 seconds into the game. The Irish doubled their lead just minutes later off Gleason's first goal of the year. However, the Titans fought back, scoring three straight goals to take a 3-2 advantage with over five minutes left in the quarter.
The score moved to 4-4 in the early stages of the second quarter and then Notre Dame completely took over. The Irish closed the half on a 3-0 run to take a 7-4 advantage into the intermission. The hosts showed no signs of letting up in the second half, carrying its momentum out of the break. Notre Dame outscored Detroit Mercy 5-0 in the third quarter to take complete contro of the game at 12-4.
The Irish tacked on seven scores in the fourth frame to run away with the 19-6 win, its largest victory to open a season in 26 seasons.

Denver raced out to a 6-2 lead midway through the third quarter, but an 8-3 Duke run and a game-winner with seven seconds to go from Joey Manown was the difference as the Blue Devils improved to 3-1 on the season.
Freshman Ellis Geis (Tustin, Calif.) scored his fourth and fifth goals of his freshman campaign and added an assist to lead the Pioneers with three points. Sophomore Ted Sullivan (Tucson, Ariz.) was Denver's other multi-goal scorer. Freshman Brett Boos (Parker, Colo.) finished 12-for-23 from the faceoff dot in his first collegiate road game.
On the defensive side, redshirt-senior transfer Matt Neufeldt (Naperville, Ill.) earned four of Denver's 11 caused turnovers, tied for the eighth most in a single game in Denver's Division I history to go with five ground balls and an assist. Seniors Dylan Gaines (Baltimore, Md.) and Dylan Johnson (Englewood, Colo.) both caused two turnovers and picked up a ground ball. Gaines moved into fifth in Denver's Division I record book with the 40th caused turnover of his career.
Duke goaltender Turner Uppgren made nine saves in the victory, while Joe Robertson added four goals in a five point day for the home team.

With less than five seconds on the shot clock later in the second quarter, senior Colton Jackson (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) fired a bomb through defenders from deep to put the Pioneers up 4-2 with 3:19 to go in the half, and the Pioneers entered the locker room with a two goal advantage.
The Pioneers outshot Duke 16-7, putting 10 of their 16 shots on goal, but Uppgren stopped six to keep the Blue Devils within two at the intermission. Denver's defense allowed just three shots on goal in the opening 30 minutes. Boos won six of the eight faceoffs in the opening 30 minutes.
