Terps beat Tar Heels 11-7 before sold out crowd

The Terrapins improved to 2-1 in Shootout appearances with an 11-7 win over former ACC rival UNC
The rivalry that took place at Orange Coast College needed no introduction this Saturday as the 2017 Champion Maryland Terrapins squared off against its 2016 counterpart, the North Carolina Tar Heels. The 6,970 fans of Orange County that made their way to the LeBard Stadium were treated to yet another classic battle in the 5th Pacific Coast Shootout. In the end though, the Terrapins proved to be too much to overcome.

The Terrapins struck early, scoring within the first few minutes of the match and maintained that shutout lead heading into the second quarter, up 2-0. Despite being down 2-0 to begin the 2nd quarter, the Tar Heels came out firing, netting its first score of the match just 36 seconds in. An alternating fashion ensued as goals were traded back and forth and Maryland went into halftime up 5-2.

Maryland kept their offense rolling throughout the 3rd quarter netting 4 more goals against the Tar Heel defense. Through 3 quarters, Maryland commanded a 9-4 lead.

The Tar Heels came out strong in the 4th quarter though, trying to cut into the Terrapins lead. William Perry of North Carolina scored and assisted on two goals to open the 4th quarter, cutting the Terrapin's lead to only three with 10 minutes remaining. With 5 minutes remaining in the match Chris Cloutier scored his second goal of the game to bring the Tar Heels to within two.

With a costly turnover in the final 4 minutes of the game, the Terrapin's own Bryce Young seized his opportunity to solidify the lead and foil any hopes of a comeback by driving down the length of the field to score the 10th goal for Maryland. For insurance purposes, Logan Wisnauskas added another goal for the Terrapins, bringing the final to 11-7. The win for Maryland brings their record to 2-1 out in Orange County at the Shootout and North Carolina falls to 0-2 in sunny southern California.
