#2 Terps beat #5 Villanova 13-11

Maryland senior Connor Kelly became just the second Terp midfielder to score 100 goals in a career.
VILLANOVA, Pa. (courtesy umterps.com) – Senior Connor Kelly became just the second midfielder in Maryland’s illustrious history to score 100 career goals as the No. 2 Terps defeated No. 5 Villanova, 13-11, Saturday afternoon.

Kelly joins the legendary Frank Urso (1973-76) as the only midfielders in program history to achieve the feat. He is the 14th Terrapin overall to reach the milestone.

Kelly finished the day with the three goals and two assists, while sophomore Jared Bernhardt added four goals and a helper. Freshman Justin Shockey was 17-for-28 (61%) with nine ground balls and an assist at the faceoff dot.

As has become customary in 2018, the Terps (6-1) jumped out to a large early lead – 4-0 to be exact – to provide a neat cushion for the Maryland defense. The run included goals from four different players: Kelly, Louis Dubick, Bernhardt and Bubba Fairman.

Villanova (6-2) scored its first goal nearly 14 minutes into the game and proceeded to cut the Terps’ lead to 4-3, but a tee-goal run in the final 6:12 of the half gave Maryland a 7-3 advantage.

Bernhardt scored a pair of goals in the run to complete his first half hat trick, while Will Snider scored his first career go

Following the halftime break, the Terps steadily extended their goal margin to five, 10-5, on a Tim Rotanz goal. It was Rotanz’ team-high 21st straight game with a point.

Junior Nick Brozowski picked up four ground balls, while Dan Morris finished with eight saves.

The Terps next set their sights on the Pacific Coast Shootout in sunny California as they take on North Carolina. The game is set for 10 pm ET on March 24.
