#2 Terps beat Notre Dame 12-10 to remain unbeaten
Senior Connor Kelly scored 10 points in Terp's 12-10 win over the Irish
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (courtesy umterps.com) – Senior Connor Kelly posted a historic 10 points on three goals and seven assists to lead the No. 2 Maryland Men’s lacrosse team (5-0) to a 12-10 win over No. 8 Notre Dame (2-1) Saturday at Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium.
Kelly became just the fourth player in Maryland history to record 10 points in a game, joining Bob Boneillo (1979), Ed Mullen (1976) and Pat O’Meally (1973). He is also just the third player in team history to record seven assists, joining Boneillo, who achieved the feat three times, and Mike Hynes (1977).
As a comparison, Kelly had just 11 assists during the entire 2017 season when he was a USILA First Team All-American.
“Connor [Kelly] had a tremendous day and I’m so proud of him to get seven assists and try to make guys better by keeping his head up and looking for his teammates,” said Maryland head coach John Tillman.
The result was a bit different than recent meetings in the series, with the Terps and Irish combining for 22 goals – the most since the inaugural meeting in 1995. Maryland had been held to four goals in both 2016 and 2017.
Freshman Justin Shockey was tremendous at the faceoff dot, winning 15-of-22 faceoffs and scooping 11 ground balls. Sophomore Jared Bernhardt finished the day with four points, including a hat trick.
Maryland never trailed in the game, jumping out to a quick 2-0 lead and taking a 4-2 advantage into the second frame. Of the 240 minutes of action this season, the Terps have only trailed for 3:13.
There were no long runs for the Terps that put the game out of reach. Instead it was a steady onslaught throughout the game. On three occasions the Irish managed to climb within a goal, but Maryland always seemed to have an answer.
Logan Wisnauskas scored two goals to extend his career-opening scoring streak to five games, while Adam DiMillo found the back of the net twice.
The win sets up a potential 1-2 matchup against No. 1 Albany next weekend in College Park. The Terps and Great Danes are set to faceoff Saturday, March 10, at noon on Big Ten Network.
