Tillman reaches 100 wins at Maryland
John Tillman earned his 100th victory in College Park with 13-6 win over Penn
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (courtesy umterps.com) – Maryland men’s lacrosse coach John Tillman became the fastest coach in program history to win 100 games as the No. 3 Terrapins defeated No. 17 Penn, 13-6, Wednesday evening at Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium.
“Candidly I don’t think much about things like this,” said Tillman in regards to the achievement. “I’m so lucky to have the job I have. I think the greatest thing after the game was to see all those former players [on the video board] and how much I admire and value my relationships with them. Seeing them successful keeps me motivated. I just love coming in everyday and seeing our kids have success.”
Tillman moved past former coach Dave Cottle for third on Maryland’s victory list, as he improved his record to 100-29 (.775) with the Terps. Tillman’s overall coaching record of 120-48 (.714) is the second-highest winning percentage among active coaches behind Bill Tierney.
"Everything Coach Tillman teaches and preaches carries off the field and into life and I've become a better person because of him," said senior goalie Dan Morris. "The attention-to-detail and hard work that he puts in every day - it's not surprising to me at all.
Just four days removed from allowing 14 goals to High Point, the Maryland defense responded emphatically by holding the Quakers to just two first half goals. The Terps (4-0) received a boost from All-American defender Bryce Young, who made his first appearance of the season returning from injury.
Freshman Logan Wisnauskas led the way on the offensive end scoring a career-high five goals, while Jared Bernhardt had four points and Bubba Fairman chipped in three. Wisnauskas has increased his goal total in all four games this season.
Freshman faceoff specialist Justin Shockey also had the best game of his young career, winning 11-of-17 faceoffs.
The Terps jumped out to a five-goal lead and never looked back, holding Penn (1-1) scoreless for the first 16:05 of action. It was a complete victory for the Terrapins, as seven different players found the back of the net.
Freshman Anthony DeMaio scored his first career goal, while senior two-way midfielder Adam DiMillo found the back of the net for the first time since scoring twice in the 2017 National Championship game.
Surrounded by his team following the game, Tillman watched the video board as more than 10 of his former Maryland players congratulated him on his achievement.
