Big Red and Cavaliers to play in Shootout

Two former NCAA Division I National Champions will do battle in the 2017 Shootout
The fourth annual Pacific Coast Shootout will feature two former NCAA Division I Champions when Cornell and Virginia take the field on Saturday, March 11 at Orange Coast College.

"We are very excited to announce the addition of Cornell and Virginia to our family of Shootout participants," said the event's executive director G.W. Mix. "Since the NCAA Division I tournament began in 1971, there have been ten programs win national championships. We have now hosted half of them in the Shootout."

The 2017 Shootout marks the ninth-straight season the Big Red and Cavaliers have faced off. In 2016, Cornell upset Virginia 14-10 in Ithaca. UVA holds a 10-6 advantage all-time against Cornell.

"We are excited to bring the Big Red out to the West Coast this spring to play against the Cavaliers," said fourth-year Cornell head coach Matt Kerwick. "Over the last few years, the game against Virginia has been a fast paced, high scoring affair. With the huge attendance and spirited games that have been a part of the Pacific Coast Shootout recently, this game should be yet another great opportunity for us to showcase our aggressive style."

The Cavaliers will travel to Southern California with a new head coach and an exciting brand of lacrosse. Lars Tiffany, former head coach at Brown University, became the head coach at Virginia in late June, replacing long-time coach Dom Starsia.

Tiffany led Brown to Championship Weekend in Philadelphia in 2016 with a 16-3 record. The Bears offense was potent, leading the nation with an average of 16.3 goals per game, including a 19-goal performance against UVA. Tiffany plans for UVA to play in a similarly aggressive and uptempo manner.

"We are absolutely committed to this style of play," says Tiffany. "This is the way the game used to be played. This is the way we played the game growing up, and it's the way I saw the game played. This is nothing new. We just dusted off the 70's and 80's."

“Receiving the invitation to join the Pacific Coast Shootout produced a quick and simple reaction from our Virginia program:  Yes!  The Pacific Coast Shootout has quickly become known as an outstanding and unique opportunity to expose our program to all the West Coast has to offer. And the icing on the cake is the electric atmosphere and great fan attendance that surrounds this game every year. The University of Virginia is excited and very grateful to be a part of the Shootout.”

The 2017 Shootout will take place on Saturday, March 11 at 6:00 PM (PST) at LeBard Stadium on the campus of Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa,CA.

Tickets will go on sale shortly.
