Sellout crowd of 6,970 see Irish beat Terps
A sold out crowd at LeBard Stadium saw Sergio Perkovic and his Irish teammates defeat Maryland 9-4
Costa Mesa, Calif. – The #1-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish (4-0) defeated the #8-ranked Maryland Terrapins (1-2) by a 9-4 margin in the third annual Pacific Coast Shootout Saturday night before a sell-out crowd of 6,970 at LeBard Stadium on the campus of Orange Coast College.
Freshman attackman Ryder Garnsey opened the scoring for the Irish, scoring an unassisted goal with 10:46 left in the first quarter. Redshirt sophomore and San Diego native Lucas Gradinger tied the game for the Terps later in the period and the teams headed to the second deadlocked.
With 6:51 left in the first half, the Terps took a 2-1 lead when junior attackman Matt Rambo found the twine. Senior attackman Matt Kavanagh drew the Irish level before halftime.
Notre Dame wasted no time getting on board in the third quarter – sophomore attackman Mikey Wynne scored just 45 seconds in.
Senior midfielder Trevor Brosco gave the Irish a 4-2 lead with 5:42 left in the period.
After a Notre Dame turnover, a quick Maryland restart led to senior midfielder Bryan Cole’s goal with 2:53 remaining in the quarter. The Terps netted an equalizer in the fourth off the stick of Isaiah Davis-Allen.
Wynne’s second of the night gave the Irish a 5-4 lead with just more than five minutes left in the fourth. A Maryland giveaway in front of its own goal set up Wynne’s three of the night with 3:29 to make it 6-4 Notre Dame.
Garnsey added his second of the night to ice the game with just less than a minute left, before Sergio Perkovic added a goal before Wynne added his fourth.
The last time the two teams met prior to Saturday was in the 2014 NCAA Final Four. Notre Dame defeated Maryland 11-6, to clinch an appearance in that year’s national championship game against Duke.
