Adamson leads DU home to California
Former Foothill Knight Erik Adamson leads the Pioneers back to Orange County.
Erik Adamson looks forward to bringing his Denver Pioneer teammates home to Orange County.
The junior midfielder will play in Southern California for the first time since being named All-American and the Orange County Player of the Year as a senior attackman at Foothill in 2011. While at Foothill, Adamson was a significant contributor to consecutive CIF Southern Section Championship teams in 2010 and 2011.
“Erik Adamson was a hard working and unassuming player with a knack for making big plays under pressure," said Foothill head coach Jon Fox. "Erik, getting the opportunity to play at Denver, continuing to work hard, scoring goals in the 2013 final four, and now getting to play with his college team back home in OC, is a huge inspiration to all our young players. Erik shows that hard work in the classroom and on the lacrosse field does indeed payoff no matter where you come from."
Since his days as a Knight, Adamson has gone on to become one of the top scorers for the Pioneers (fourth in scoring in 2013). He broke out early in his sophomore season at Denver when, on February 9, Adamson recorded a career high five goals against the Duke Blue Devils.
Erik's path to DU was not the typical high school recruiting odyssey.
"Erik was an anomaly to the ‘normal’ recruiting that currently takes place in Division I lacrosse," said DU head Coach Bill Tierney. He didn’t attend many recruiting events and we found out about him very late in his senior year. A long-time friend of mine, Ray Ralph from Long Island, was Erik’s high school coach and he wrote me an email late in Erik’s senior year. He told me that he believed that Erik had all the attributes necessary to be a player at Denver. First, we found out that he was an outstanding student, watched some film, had him come to campus, really liked him and his family, and the rest is history."
Tierney seems most impressed with Adamson's versatility.
"Erik is one of the rare, truly ambidextrous lacrosse players I have ever come across. When he first came, we admired his ability to cut and finish, but quickly discovered his feeding, dodging, and shooting skills. He played attack in his freshman year, midfield last year, and will play both this year. He has a great lacrosse I.Q. and stays calm under pressure."
Adamson is one of several Californians making an impact in Division I and, as a result, drawing major college programs to the West Coast in search of players who can help them compete at the highest level.
"Erik comes from a great family who live in California," Tierney added. "To me, California lacrosse players have passed the threshold of it being a surprise that they can be the best in the country. He obviously had very good coaching, has a passion for the game, and the athleticism to play at the highest level. We are lucky that California can produce players like Erik, but even more fortunate that he decided to come to Denver."
