Terps surf to 10-8 win over Heels
Joe LoCascio, with 5 goals led the Terrapins past the Tar Heels
Senior Joe LoCascio scored a career-high five goals and Kyle Bernlohr made 11 saves as the No. 5 Maryland men’s lacrosse team knocked off previously unbeaten No. 2 North Carolina, 10-8, Saturday night before a crowd of 6,785 in the Pacific Coast Shootout at Santa Ana Stadium.
In a matchup pitting the nation’s top defensive (Maryland) and top offensive (UNC) sides, it was the defense that prevailed as the Terps held the Tar Heels more than eight goals below their season average.
Although North Carolina struck first in the first 90 seconds, it was the Terrapins who answered back with a pair of goals from Henry West and LoCascio. Tate Jozokos then closed the quarter with a Tar Heel goal to square the game, 2-2.
That would be the final North Carolina goal for a span of 33:25, however, as LoCascio and Colin Heacock combined for five goals in a monstrous 5-0 Terp run that gave Maryland a commanding 7-2 advantage. Heacock finished the game with a career-high three goals.
The Tar Heels finally broke their scoring drought with a pair of goals 21 seconds apart in the final minute of the third quarter to cut their deficit to three, 7-4.
Bobby Gribbin answered with a goal to open the fourth quarter to put Maryland ahead, 8-4, before Jozokos and Luke Goldstock notched two goals for the Heels.
Leading by just two goals, 8-6, it was LoCascio and Heacock who scored goals in succession again to give Maryland a comfortable four-goal cushion. The cushion proved necessary, as the Tar Heels managed two desperate tallies in the final 1:30.
Senior Charlie Raffa was excellent at the faceoff X, winning 15-of-22 faceoffs. He has won at least 13 faceoffs in three consecutive games.
The Terps have a short turnaround as they travel to Moon Township, Pa., for a matchup with Robert Morris Tuesday night at 4 p.m.
NOTES:
- Maryland moved to 40-24 all-time against the Tar Heels, capturing its first win in the series since 2011
- Maryland won its 27th consecutive game when scoring at least 10 goals
- Jay Carlson’s team-leading 11-game goal-scoring streak was snapped
- LoCascio’s five goals was the most since Mike Chanenchuk scored five goals against Bryant on May 17, 2014
