Nation's top defense to meet second-ranked offense
Maryland's top-rated defense will face the Tar Heels and the #2-ranked offense
It should be an epic showdown at the Shootout on Saturday night in Santa Ana. Maryland, with the nation's top defense (allowing just 4.5 goals per game), takes on Carolina, with the second ranked offense in Division I lacrosse (scoring 16.38 goals per game).
The Maryland Terrapins head west on Tuesday to begin their 6-day spring break trip; the Tar Heels travel to Orange County on Thursday following a home game against Harvard on Tuesday.
Maryland wins its fourth straight on Saturday. Senior Charlie Raffa won 13-of-16 faceoffs and Matt Rambo totaled four points to lead the No. 8 Maryland men’s lacrosse team to an 11-2 victory over No. 15 Villanova.
The nation’s top scoring defense lived up to its billing, as the Terps held Villanova scoreless for stretches of 28:54 and 28:04 in the win. Goalkeeper Kyle Bernlohr made nine saves, improving his season save percentage to a nation’s best .708.

The Tar Heels’ powerful attack unit combined for nine goals, nine assists and 12 ground balls in the game while the first midfield unit totaled six goals and four assists in a game that was nip and tuck for the entire first half.
North Carolina sophomore attackman Luke Goldstock had six goals in the game to lead the Tar Heels. He also added an assist. The six goals matched his career high, which was set last Tuesday against Bryant in a 10-9 Tar Heel victory. In the past three games against Manhattan, Bryant and Richmond, Goldstock has combined to score 17 goals and he now has 29 goals on the season. Goldstock’s 17 goals are the most in a three-game stretch by any Tar Heel in UNC history. Goldstock has recorded hat tricks in six of Carolina’s eight games this season.
