Maryland beats Penn 11-7

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Sophomores Matt Rambo and Dylan Maltz combined for five goals and four assists to lead the No. 10 Maryland men’s lacrosse team to an 11-7 victory over No. 11 Penn Tuesday evening at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium.
Leading by just one goal at halftime, 5-4, the Terrapin offense exploded in the third quarter for four unanswered goals, including three in a 2:07 span.
As has become customary this season, the Terps jumped out to a quick lead, 3-0, as Bryan Cole tallied a goal 1:13 into the game, followed by goals from Rambo and Joe LoCascio.
Penn bounced back with a pair of Joe McCallion goals, but Maryland responded when Jay Carlson scored to reclaim a 4-2 advantage.
The scoring slowed down in the second quarter, before Rambo scored his second of the game on a rocket shot from the right wing 11 minutes into the frame. Penn cut its deficit to one, 5-4, 1:33 before the halftime break.
Maryland’s offense dominated the opening portion of the third quarter as Carlson, Rambo, Henry West and Maltz scored a string of goals to open a 9-4 lead. Rambo assisted on two of the goals, matching his career-high of two assists for the first time since achieving the feat against Mount St. Mary’s on Feb. 8, 2014.
Penn scored three of the next four goals in the contest in a comeback attempt, but LoCascio shut the door with 3:13 remaining in the game, giving the Terps an 11-7 lead.
Jon Garino, Jr., had an excellent day at the faceoff X, winning 14-of-22 faceoffs.
The Terps return to action Saturday, Feb. 28, as they meets Drexel at noon for the first time in program history at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium.
